Back in the early 90s, Kawasaki introduced the Zephyr — a retro-styled reissue designed to emulate the original Z1. As the biggest of the bunch, the 1100 featured an evolution of the GPz1100’s 8V DOHC air-cooled engine, good for a claimed 92hp and a top speed of 124mph. The idea was to combine modern convenience with old-school cool — a concept that predated the current classic craze.
In Japan, the model was wildly successful, spawning clubs, racing classes, and even dedicated magazines. At the time, however, motorcycle sales were slumping in the United States, and the Zephyr line was largely overlooked. And it’s a shame, because the 1100 is amongst the last of the great aircooled big bores.
In fact, Cycle World Magazine said in its 1992 review that, “A ride on the Zephyr 1100 is a delight. Its seat-footpeg-handlebar relationship offers what may be the most comfortable riding position on any standard, and this is enhanced by the smooth, confident ride designed into the suspension.”
