The GPX750 of the late 1980’s was no slouch in terms of power, and it even won Cycle World’s award for best 750cc streetbike in 1987 and 1988. Still, Kawasaki saw potential with a new class of Ninja using the 16-valve liquid cooled inline four from the GPX and in 1989 launched what would become one of their most iconic models. The ZX-7 was a completely new bike with a perimeter style aluminum frame, adjustable suspension, 17″ wheels front and back and a tweaked 750cc engine putting out a solid 105 horsepower.
Unlike the rare homologation specials released by other Japanese manufactures, the ZX-7 was an affordable 750cc bike that was available to everyone – racers and street riders alike. The ZX-7 was a really good road bike right out of the crate, but with some special parts and a bit of work it could be made into a very competent race machine, and for many years the bike saw incredible success on the race track. 1990 saw significant revisions to the engine and bigger carbs bringing more power, and a new swingarm changed the wheel base. 1991 ushered in a freshly restyled J model ZX-7 with more engine improvements, an inverted 43mm front fork, lighter frame and the introduction of the limited K model that carried many special parts and a hefty price tag. The 1992 J model ZX-7 brought further refinement to the suspension.

“Over the last few years this bike has had a lot of work done to make it a very fun and clean rider motorcycle. It’s not a perfect show bike, it is a 30 year old sport bike that has been used and taken care of by all of its owners. Recent work on the bike includes: valves adjusted, carbs cleaned and rebuilt, new fuel pump, oil change and filter, new spark plugs, Steel braided brake lines and new brake pads, new chain/front and rear sprocket, new air filter, coolant system flushed and refilled, fork seals replaced. The bike was given a deep clean and some parts were restored or replaced.”
Modifications:
“Has a full Muzzy system which sounds amazing and really brings out that Kawasaki growl.”
Fox remote reservoir rear shock.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller states that the “plastics have a few cracks, one attachment ear is broken off the side fairing, tail section has paint scuffs, wheels have paint chips. Tank is in near perfect shape, air tubes are clean with no cracks, fairings are good, with a few cracks here and there and one ear missing at the nose cone/ side fairing junction. Also missing 2 lower tail section in/frame attachment nuts, but have not had any issues with that..”
“At some point someone tried to recover the seats. I did my best to fix that, looks ok but not correct.”
It is riding on Dunlop Q3+ tires.
Currently located in Corralitos, California, this Kawasaki is offered on a clean California title with registration current through November 2022.
The seller sums up his bike by saying, “this thing rides really nice, and runs great. I know its not a V4 Panigale, but still holds its own in the speed department and will get you in trouble. You don’t see these anymore, most were crashed, or ridden so hard they are now parts. When ever I ride this I get thumbs up and people always stop to talk about how cool these were. Yep, it’s green white and blue and it’s not subtle, but somehow it all works and has to be one of the best looking bikes of the 90’s.” Have any ZX-7 stories or questions about this listing?
