Upon its debut in 1991, the 900SS proved a resounding success due to the exotic Italian styling and punchy performance. As is typical of Ducati, however, the best means to market the bike was to produce a limited edition numbered variant. Accordingly, the Bologna-based firm released the 900 Superlight (SL) just a year later.
Originally, Ducati only planned to released 500 examples; over time, that number grew to around 900, with 300 yellow variants making their way stateside.
Though it featured the same engine, frame, and suspension as the standard 900SS, the Superlight boasted a variety of choice extras. Moreover, throughout the model’s production life, Ducati released several iterations — beginning with the Superlight I and culminating with the Superlight IV in 1995. The Superlight I (like the one being offered here) featured a set of 17-inch Marvic wheels, carbon fiber fenders, and a sporty solo seat. Together, these upgrades shaved nearly 25lbs off off the dry weight, making it one of the lightest bikes in its class.
This example is VIN: ZDM1LC4N3PB006588. The seller acquired it from Dunbar Eurosports in Brockton, MA on consignment from a private party in Rhode Island on September 18th, 2012. The owner is selling it because they never ride it and would like it to go to someone who will enjoy it.
It is #948.
During his ownership, the seller has covered 2,770 miles. The odometer shows 11,524 miles.
Maintenance:
Per the seller, there is “no documentation on original service at time of purchase in 2012 (Tires, belts, valve adjustment, break fluid, and oil change) We have documentation on the recent work done to it in December of 2023 which includes a carburetor clean, oil change, break fluid flush, and a new lithium ion battery.” He adds that “Recently, we noticed that the battery box attached to the air box was cracked so we replaced it with a new used one. The bike has no mechanical issues, runs and rides great and has been well cared for and stored in a heated showroom.”
Modifications:
Metmachex Engineering swingarm. Rear sprocket from Sprocket Specialists.
Corbin seat.
Noted by the seller, “There is a fuel shut off valve installed inline on the right side of the bike so you don’t have to lift up the tank to shut the fuel off.”
K&N air filter.
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on aged out Michelin tires with date codes of 4411 and 1512.
The sale includes one key and the owner’s manual.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller notes, “slight corrosion on engine cases.” “slight rust on exhaust headers.” “slight corrosion on upper fork tube.” “slight corrosion on the front wheel.”
