The Ducati 888 SPO was a limited edition of the 888 that was only sold in the US in 1993 and 1994.
Ian Falloon called it an “amalgam of the limited production high-performance SP5 and the European-specification 888 Strada” – the SP5 didn’t pass US regulations for import so the SPO was created for AMA Superbike homologation purposes. Upgrades over the Strada included the monoposto tail, upswept exhaust, and Ohlins shock.
Most sources state that only 100 examples were sold in the US in 1994, and they were differentiated in name (officially they were called the 888 SPO Limited or LTD) as well as in content (carbon fiber front fender, bronze wheels, larger front axle, and a numbered plaque on the top triple clamp).
This example (VIN: ZDM1HB7R5RB002023) is #89 of the SPO Limiteds.
The odometer shows 6,555 miles.
The seller acquired it roughly six years ago. He then sent it to Pro Italia in Glendale, California for a restoration.
Restoration work included:
Silmotor exhaust.
CRG bar end mirror.
Samco hoses “after having all fittings polished in order to remove any signs of corrosion.”
New Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires, chain, and sprockets.
New hoses, fuel lines, and fittings.
New timing belts and valve adjustment. He also had Tony Markus refinished and repaint the stator cover.
Cleaned the brake calipers.
The seller did a lot of the heavy lifting himself with regards to disassembly and cleaning. He had Mr. Markus restore the paint on the body panels and clear coat them.
The seller states that he’s covered approximately 150 miles since the restoration was performed.
