Yamaha first introduced the TZ125 in 1980 as a smaller, more accessible counterpart to its wildly popular TZ250 club racer. And here’s the thing: while most other two-strokes of the era enjoyed relatively short production lives, the little TZ re-appeared in 1994 and soldiered on all the way until 2010.
For the power plant, Yamaha utilized a liquid-cooled two-stroke single with the crankshaft, main shaft, and drive shaft arranged in a V-shape for improved balance. Though the engine only measured some 124cc in displacement, it put out a respectable 42hp — not bad, when you consider the bike’s svelte 158-pound dry weight.
Elsewhere, the TZ125 featured many of the same trick technology found on its older sibling, including an Aluminum Deltabox frame, Yamaha’s YPVS, a six-speed cassette transmission, dual disc brakes, and a rear monoshock. For more information on what made the bike special, check out this post from Yamaha’s museum.
