The Ducati that started it all…
Designed by the famous Massimo Tamburini, this all-original Ducati 916 is in great shape and the very definition of an Iconic Motorbike! This particular bike is confirmed as being one of the “Varese 916s.” If you’re not familiar with the story, demand for the new 916 was very high and Ducati’s Bologna factory was overwhelmed. A serious fire shut down production and meant unacceptable delays, so Ducati ran partly-finished bikes over to the Cagiva factory in Varese to be completed. Most, if not all of the bikes with VIN numbers below 2600 were built in Varese, and this one is numbered 2283. A second “tell” is the 11th digit of the VIN is a V rather then the traditional B. Why is this so important you may ask? It’s not just that they were built in the Cagiva factory but they were all hand built and supposably of better quality.
Currently has 11,077 miles and doesn’t appear to have ever been dropped, damaged or mishandled in any way. Bodywork is excellent with no damage whatsoever. Frame does have some discoloring on it but, from what I’ve seen, the factory paint wasn’t amazing back then, so the matte gold has different hues throughout. Has a slight rub mark on the left frame from a boot making contact, but we’d be happy to send you all the images you would like if interested.
The Monoposto is a single-seat option only with the lightweight subframe to match. If you’re planning on riding it with a passenger, just be aware that you’ll have to switch out the entire subframe as well as the tail section to incorporate passenger pegs.
Bike has been in a collection for quite some time, so it will need a refresh and a thorough inspection prior to running, although owner states that belts and fluids are fine. We’d still recommend an inspection just the same. The Dunlop Sportmax tires are as new with what appears to be 0 miles on them and a production date of 2017 so they’re still very fresh.
