After the Gold Wing had distinguished itself as a resounding success here in the United States, Honda wanted to expand on the concept with something a bit more Euro-friendly. What resulted was the ST1100 — also known as the Pan-European — a lighter, nimbler sport tourer designed with spirited riding in mind.
As opposed to the flat-four found in the Gold Wing, Honda utilized a 90-degree V4 in the ST. Measuring some 1,085cc in displacement, it was mounted longitudinally in the frame and paired with a five-speed transmission and a final shaft drive. On the road, this translated to 100hp at 8,500rpm and 79lb-ft of torque at 6,000rpm.
In order to prepare it for the demands of long-distance touring, Honda fitted the ST1100 with a full fairing, panniers, a 40-amp, air-cooled alternator, and a large 7.4-gallon fuel tank. Interestingly, the bike relocated the tank beneath the saddle as a means of lowering its center of gravity and improving its handling. For extra braking confidence, riders also had the option of equipping their STs with TCS and ABS.
MCN put it best in their review: “The Honda ST1100 chassis is so beautifully balanced that despite the colossal dry weight it feels poised and light, even at walking pace… The only problem is availability – owners rate them so highly that low-mileage machines are rarer than hen’s teeth. Not that mileage matters as the motor and construction quality is thermospherically high.”
This example is VIN: JH2SC2605SM500032. The seller acquired the bike eight and a half years ago, he states: “I’m a senior citizen trying to down sizing his collection. I owned 11 motorcycles at one time and rotated them.”
You will NOT be disappointed with my ST1100 ! These bikes have a cult following.
The odometer shows 25,231 miles.
