Cold Start

Ride video:

In the early 1990s, Honda turned the motorcycling world on its head when it released the CBR900RR Fireblade. The ‘Blade’s designer, Tadao Baba, primarily focused on keeping weight down above all else — a must considering his brief was to deliver a modern superbike with open-class power, weighing no more than your average 600 of the day. The “Fireblade” name is actually the result of a mistranslation of the word “lightning”, and it didn’t fit squarely into any of the existing major classes. Rather, Honda’s goal was to create the best possible road-going superbike, and the eventual result was the 900RR.

1996 marked the debut of the third generation – Honda tweaked the suspension and chassis for more torsional rigidity, changed the position and shape of the clip-ons for a more comfortable riding position. They also bored out the motor an additional 1 mm, increasing displacement to 918cc and bumping up the output an additional 8 horsepower and 3 lb-ft of torque at the crank (130 hp, 68 lb-ft). Dry weight dropped by over 6 pounds to 401.

Manufactured in January of 1996, this example is VIN: JH22C3325TM000210. The seller acquired it four months ago from “a friend who restored the bike over the last two years.”

During his ownership, the seller has covered 300 miles. The odometer shows 35,524 kilometers (22,100 miles).

I wanted to scratch the itch. I rode it through a few tanks after I finished up a few items that the bike needed.

Maintenance:
-All bearings (including swing arm). Steering head bearings are original. Although in decent shape, there is a touch of movement when the front end is elevated. I will change them out to tapered set prior to moving the bike on.
-All fluids (coolant, brake, oil and filter).
-Carbs are balanced, and air/fuel screws adjusted.
-New tires (Dunlops) and brake pads. All OEM brake hoses in perfect shape.
-Sprockets and chain.
-Swing arm vapor blasted, frame cleaned back to original.
-Tank is spotless (see pic, vid).
-Carbs balanced, and running well except for slight stumble below 2k.
-Motor has cold compression ranging between 185 and 192 PSI across all four cylinders. Pulls strong.
-New Yuasa battery.
-Front fork fully rebuilt.
-Two keys (Original and cut key). All keys are matching. Rear key latch works perfect.

Mechanical Issues:
Choke cable broke and I had to glue it back together (cannot buy OEM anymore and eBay stuff is no good). You have to hold the choke cable for 30 sec. till the bike settles down.”

Modifications:

Not pictured: Lowering brackets.

New paint over OEM plastics, with use of correct decal kit. Inner fairings painted black and clear coated. Zero imperfections/scratches. All paint/plastics diamond coated.”

Wheels painted and lips polished.

Yoshimura exhaust.

Aftermarket faux carbon fiber rear hugger, battery tender lead.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Dunlop tires with date codes of 3524 and 2525.

The sale includes 2 ignition keys, original tool kit. The sale also includes a “spare black rear rim. Two spare right mid and right lower OEM plastics and OEM repair manual, and OEM exhaust can (loads of scratches, but could be made decent). Period correct tank bra included.”

If the winning bidder wishes, the seller is willing to separately sell the front end from a Honda CBR954RR for $500 USD: “Direct bolt in. Gray powdercoated rim, (anodized tubes, rebuilt internals, one new disk, one OEM disk in good shape, calipers, R6 master cylinder, stainless steel lines and triple clamp).”

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album in the “Photos” tab for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
Two very small imperfections/wear items shown on video. Top triple has some minor marks.”
