Before 1986, MX in America was basically a lawless land. Companies could compete with a crazy one-off beast of a machine that would never see itself in the hands of the fans watching. But in 1986, a “production rule” debuted which forced companies to show up with bikes that would were being mass produced.

Honda completely dominated 250 MX in 1986, and kept making revisions each year in an attempt to stay ahead. The 1988 bike introduced a “low boy” style that riders loved, though changes to the motor and suspension weren’t as well received. So Honda updated the bike yet again in 1989 with changes to wake up the motor (new cylinder, revised porting, reshaped head, earlier activation of the Honda Power Port, etc), thicker linkage bolts in the rear suspension, and an all-new Showa 45mm USD cartridge fork.

Come 1990, Honda had all but solidified it’s CR250R recipe, evidenced by the fact that the model saw little to no changes from 1992 all the way through to ’97. What changes there were included a change in bodywork, a stark-white frame, and some changes and refinement to the suspension. While the reception of the changes left much to be desired, it was this exact muted response that spurred Honda to tweak the CR250R come ’94. Hearing the outpouring of a stiffer and more robust frame that was capable of handling the rowdy 2-stroke engine, the ’96 model was widely renown for being the epitome of Honda’s dirt-bike R&D up until that point, bringing together the best of the previous iteration’s design and performance choices.
