Ducati kicked off the Sport Turismo line with the launch of the ST2 in 1997. Intended as a replacement for the Paso and a competitor for the VFR800, Concours, and other spirited tourers, it broke away from the Italian marque’s traditional offerings with a generous full fairing, a relaxed riding position, a plush two-up seat, optional luggage, and even a centerstand.
Of course, the ST2 was still a Ducati through and through. Designed around a tubular steel trellis frame and powered by a 944cc liquid-cooled Desmodromic two-valve V-twin, it was good for 83hp and 62lb-ft of torque. Add to that a dry clutch, a set of Showa upside-down forks, a Sachs rear shock, as well as some Brembo discs and calipers, and you’re left with an exotic that’s comfortable enough for all-day exploits but lively enough to take some twisties.
As Motorcycle.com put in its first impression review, “Our brief ride aboard the ST2 around Santa Barbara’s tight, twisty city streets revealed a quick steering bike that could be flicked over with ease, despite the added weight of its touring gear. Of course there was that unmistakable feel and torque of a Duc desmo V-twin, with an extremely comfortable two-up riding position that should lend itself well to sport touring.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1TB9P2WB002289. Per the seller, “Bought this bike in October 2020 from a friend who bought it from the original owner in NorCal. Said friend went through the bike, replacing belts, checked valve tolerances, added new tires, replaced brake pads, changed oil. I spent a lot of years as a young man on the back of Ducati ST’s (ST2/3/4) with my dad and grandpa traveling all over CA. This bike brought back a lot of memories and so I bought it from him after one ride. I have taken it on a few longer rides as well as weekend canyon trips. I love the bike! It is comfortable, handles well, and sounds GREAT, but I have other bikes and need to consolidate.”
The odometer shows 14,849 miles.
