Replacing the legendary 916, the 996 was Ducati’s flagship superbike from 1999-2002. The gorgeous Tamburini-designed aesthetics remained, but upgrades like larger pistons and valves, a stronger crankshaft, lighter wheels, and better brakes all combined for an improved riding experience.
Per Motorcycle News: “Everything about owning this design icon feeds my love for it. I never tire of seeing it in the garage, of the lazy churn as those big pistons pulse into life and that thunderous burst of ignition on start-up. I love how dense, taut and compact it feels, how at home it is mid-corner, or how its rhythms and sonorous tones get inside your brain. Riding it feels excitingly illicit, like having an affair, without actually being unfaithful. Every ride feels like falling in love again.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1SB5T5XB000740. The seller has owned the bike 19 years and is selling because he is looking to get back on a 2-stroke.
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 7,339 miles. The odometer shows 9,182 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “10k mile service completed by specialist in Oct ’23 including OEM timing belts, valve adjustment, mixtures and TPS settings adjusted, new coolant tank and coolant, rockers inspected. Also in 2023 it got new air filters, oil and filter, plugs, brake/clutch fluids, and AGM battery installed.”
Modifications:
Higher profile windscreen. White vinyl wrap front number panel with copper/gold pinstripe border (to match the OEM rear bodywork) applied.
Ducati Performance rear fender/chain guard (carbon, repainted satin black).
Ducati Performance full length tank protector (carbon, recovered with carbon wrap & felt lined). “The top disc portion of the fuel tank bolt boss was broken off in prior ownership (noted in service documents from ’04), likely due to a too-long bolt being installed in error, and/or installed with an impact gun. This was repaired by drilling and tapping for a set screw down the centreline, installing an off-centre roll pin, assembling with epoxy, and paint touch-up.”
Inside of the tank:
It is riding on Michelin tires which are aged out.
The sale includes two keys, a color-matched rear axle stand, the original tool kit, the owner’s manual, previous ownership Washington state documents, records of sale to seller, service records, and a service handbook.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
Per the seller, “In 2023 it was cosmetically refreshed: Stone chips and minor loading ramp scratches on lower fairings touched up, blended, and clear coated; rear subframe repainted; front brake reservoir cap and various fasteners replaced with new OEM; new OEM instrument foam.”
