Description
Designed to be the ultimate 996 at the time, the SPS (Sport Production Special) is an incredible combination of performance and beauty. The limited edition SPS was an uprated version that featured a modified engine and chassis.
Nearly all the specifications were improved, such as the lighter Marchesini 5-spoke wheel and Ohlins rear shock.
It’s distinctive dual headlight and smart red and white bodywork are an evolution of the iconic 916, designed by the legendary Massimo Tamburini.
Engine work included titanium connecting rods, upgraded cams, and a lightened crankshaft. The SPS also got a bigger generator and Termignoni pipes. All this was good for an additional 12 horsepower, and the modified chassis made the whole package that much sweeter.
Technically, you weren’t supposed to enjoy said package on the street – the SPS was only road legal in Europe. Ducati didn’t conform to EPA regulations, so they sold it as a ‘track-only’ bike and made buyers sign a waiver saying that you wouldn’t register it for road use. As you might imagine, pretty much everyone ignored the waiver, as the bike came with a VIN, lights, a title, and everything needed to register the bike.
This example is VIN: ZDMH100AAXB002092. The owner purchased the bike last year.
It is number 017 of the production run.
During his ownership, the seller has covered less than 500 miles. The odometer shows 51,013 kilometers (31,698 miles).
Maintenance:
The bike was serviced in February of this year. Regarding the work performed, the seller notes:
– “All rockers were replaced during the service visit earlier this year also and all valves re-shimmed with new half rings and all cams and rocker covers were removed and resealed with new gaskets and 0-rings.
– Replaced all cam belt pulley bearings with Nachi 6003-2RS.
– The OEM coolant hoses were replaced with new Samco hoses and clamps during service
– Engine mounts and swingarm pivot re-torqued, chain lubed and adjusted
– Original parts replaced during service are boxed and included.”
The following service report and recent condition report has been provided:
Modifications:
“CNC aftermarket clutch slave cylinder and cover, mirrors painted red, believed to be aftermarket seat cover, Ducati Performance carbon fiber rear hugger and chain guard, aftermarket (we assume) cover over filler panel under fuel tank.”
It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart III tires with date codes of 1421 and 1721.
The sale includes one key, and extra gaskets and hoses.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
