Back around the turn of the turn of the 20th Century, Excelsior and Henderson were two of the most prominent motorcycle manufacturers in the United States — and for good reason. The former had successfully built the first bike to officially hit 100mph, whereas the latter produced a range of models that proved especially popular with law enforcement. Though Schwinn eventually acquired both companies, the financial hardships of the Great Depression forced their closure in 1931.
Come 1993, the Excelsior and Henderson names finally made their return by way of the Minnesota-based Hanlon Manufacturing Company. In an appeal to American nostalgia, they dubbed the revived brand’s first offering the ‘Super X’ — a nod to the 1929 model bearing the same name.
Under the proverbial hood, the bike boasted a 1,400cc air-cooled V-twin based on a design by British Weslake Engineering. When paired with a five-speed transmission and a toothed rear belt, the block was good for some 63 horsepower and 70lb-ft of torque at the rear wheel. Of course, the big cruiser wasn’t intended for spirited riding; rather, it was meant to charm riders with its retro style. Up front, it featured a leading-link fork meant to resemble the setup found on its ancestor. In addition to four prominent legs running through the fender, it sported a pair of gas-filled damping cartridges.
While production of the Super X began in 1999, unfortunately, the second incarnation of Excelsior-Henderson was as doomed as the first. The .com bubble of the 1990s meant that the Hanlon Manufacturing Company could not secure its next round of funding, and the remaining assets were sold off. Upon closure, only 1,952 Super X’s had been produced over two years.
Manufactured in May of 1999, this example is VIN: 5EH1HCX00XB000712, Engine #: 000712. The seller acquired the bike four years from a private party in El Cajon. He is the second owner. He reports that the bike “has always been stored inside, in a climate-controlled garage.”
It is #712 out of the “initial Production Series.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately four miles. The odometer shows seven miles.
