Replacing the legendary 916, the 996 was Ducati’s flagship superbike from 1999-2002. The gorgeous Tamburini-designed aesthetics remained, but upgrades like larger pistons and valves, a stronger crankshaft, lighter wheels, and better brakes all combined for an improved riding experience.
For the 2000 model year, the 996 also got Marchesini 5-spoke wheels and titanium nitride-coated forks.
Per Motorcycle News: “Everything about owning this design icon feeds my love for it. I never tire of seeing it in the garage, of the lazy churn as those big pistons pulse into life and that thunderous burst of ignition on start-up. I love how dense, taut and compact it feels, how at home it is mid-corner, or how its rhythms and sonorous tones get inside your brain. Riding it feels excitingly illicit, like having an affair, without actually being unfaithful. Every ride feels like falling in love again.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1SB5T4YB008040. The seller purchased the bike in Illinois from the original owner in August 2007.
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 1,000 miles. The odometer shows 5,036 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “Complete service in May of 2016 at 4,965 miles includes oil and filter, brake fluid flush, remove/replace mirrors with original stock style, remove/replace front blinkers with original stock style, new tires installed, lube/adjust chain, safety inspection, remove/replace rear brake pads. I also replaced the kick stand, as the original one was slightly bent. I have the paperwork documenting these service items.” He adds, “Sometimes the low fuel indicator light is illuminated even when the tank is full, however, this bike has been stored in my heated garage for 16 years as part of my modest collection. I start it up and take her out on short rides monthly, on good weather dry road days only. This bike is ready for your collection as a show piece or for a Sunday afternoon rider.”
