Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 2000 Ducati 996 SPS. Please note that it comes up as a 998 but that is not uncommon for NMVTIS reports when it comes to a 996 SPS. Additional photos are available here for your perusal.
Designed to be the ultimate 996 at the time, the SPS (Sport Production Special) is an incredible combination of performance and beauty. The limited edition SPS was an uprated version that featured a modified engine and chassis.
Nearly all the specifications were improved, such as the lighter Marchesini 5-spoke wheel and Ohlins rear shock.
In 2000, Ducati upgraded the Showa forks to Ohlins units, as well.
Engine work included titanium connecting rods, upgraded cams, and a lightened crankshaft. The SPS also got a bigger generator and Termignoni pipes. All this was good for an additional 12 horsepower, and the modified chassis made the whole package that much sweeter. Technically, you weren’t supposed to enjoy said package on the street – the SPS was only road legal in Europe.
Ducati didn’t conform to EPA regulations, so they sold it as a ‘track-only’ bike and made buyers sign a waiver saying that you wouldn’t register it for road use.
As you might imagine, pretty much everyone ignored the waiver, as the bike came with a VIN, lights, a title, and everything needed to register the bike.
Manufactured in November of 1999, this example is VIN: ZDM3SB5V1YB003209, Engine #: SB5Y010836. It is #1069 in the production run. The seller acquired it six months ago from the family of the original owner.
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 100 miles. The odometer shows 2,552 miles.
The seller is a long time friend of Iconic Motorbikes and a well-known Ducati expert. We asked him to share his thoughts on the bikes, and he said: “I own many of these machines, and this is one of the nicest examples I have seen. The bike just underwent a thorough concours quality detail and cleaning and major service including belts, valve adjustment and rocker inspection, all fluids flushed and changed, Motul 300V Oil change, etc. This was all performed by myself as I’m very familiar with these bikes and own many of them and prefer to do my own work to a very high standard. Also, the rear chain guides were replaced due to age. The old set is included with the sale. The clutch slave was also rebuilt. It was not leaking but was done for age so it wouldn’t start leaking and ruin the perfect engine cover paint. It is ready to rip up twisties or make someone a very nice static piece of art given the low mileage and collectability. An in-person inspection before the closing of the auction is welcomed and encouraged. I hope the pics of all the date coded parts and other close up pics do the job of representing what and original and pristine bike this is. I will be glad to take more specific pics if requested or provide any further information needed. Looking forward to a great auction and conversation on this wonderful machine!”
Maintenance:
The seller notes that the belts were last replaced on 9/10/24. “All services up to date. Fresh belts, valve adjustment, all fluids. Fresh Motul 300V oil change.”
Modifications:
BMC air filters – the originals are included.
It is riding on Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires that have aged out.
The sale includes two keys, Owner’s Manual, World Dealer Guide, second Termingnoni exhaust that originally came with the bike, tool kit, and some miscellaenous extras.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
The seller states that there are no cosmetic blemishes.
