Recent Cold Start:
Designed to be the ultimate 996 at the time, the SPS (Sport Production Special) is an incredible combination of performance and beauty. The limited edition SPS was an uprated version that featured a modified engine and chassis.

Nearly all the specifications were improved, such as the lighter Marchesini 5-spoke wheel and Ohlins rear shock.

In 2000, Ducati upgraded the Showa forks to Ohlins units, as well.

Engine work included titanium connecting rods, upgraded cams, and a lightened crankshaft. The SPS also got a bigger generator and Termignoni pipes. All this was good for an additional 12 horsepower, and the modified chassis made the whole package that much sweeter. Technically, you weren’t supposed to enjoy said package on the street – the SPS was only road legal in Europe.

Ducati didn’t conform to EPA regulations, so they sold it as a ‘track-only’ bike with no warranty and made buyers sign a waiver saying that you wouldn’t register it for road use.

As you might imagine, pretty much everyone ignored the waiver, as the bike came with a VIN, lights, a title, and everything needed to register the bike.

Manufactured in November of 1999, this example is VIN: ZDM3SB5V6YB003268. The seller is the original owner, he purchased it new from Ducati of Manhattan.

It is #1451 in the production run.

“I bought this Ducati 996 SPS new as part of my passion for Ducati and as a key piece in my personal collection. It was not a flip or a trade. It was chosen very intentionally because of what the SPS represents in Ducati history and superbike culture. From day one it has been carefully owned as a collector bike and kept in my collector garage. It has essentially lived the life of a display piece that was still cared for mechanically, not a bike that was parked and forgotten.”
Maintenance:
The seller states: “Maintenance was done based on time, not miles. Oil was changed every twelve months. Coolant was changed every two years. The timing belt was replaced very early at around 180 miles. Based on age, it is now due for a standard refresh, which I want to be fully transparent about for the next owner. A new OEM Yuasa battery has just been installed so the bike starts strong.”
Modifications:
This SPS appears to be completely stock.

It is riding on the original Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

The sale includes two keys, tool kit, Ducati rear stand, receipt from the original purchase, owner’s manual, brochures, and cover.
