In 1999, Ducati updated the instant-classic 916 with a larger motor and a corresponding name change to 996. The new model debuted with three models, the middle of which was the “S”.
The S got several upgrades, including:
Lighter 5-spoke Marchesini wheels.
Extra carbon fiber pieces.
Ohlins shock and steering damper.
Per Motorcycle News: “Everything about owning this design icon feeds my love for it. I never tire of seeing it in the garage, of the lazy churn as those big pistons pulse into life and that thunderous burst of ignition on start-up… I love how dense, taut and compact it feels, how at home it is mid-corner, or how its rhythms and sonorous tones get inside your brain. Riding it feels excitingly illicit, like having an affair, without actually being unfaithful. Every ride feels like falling in love again.”
Manufactured in October of 1999, this example is VIN: ZDM1SB5T3YB007249. The seller bought the bike two years ago from a private party in California. During his ownership, the seller has covered roughly 250 miles. The seller states: “I’ve known this bike since it was new. I am the 3rd owner. My friend purchased it from the first owner in about 2004 or 5. Until I purchased it from him in September of 2023.”
The seller states the odometer currently shows 5,821 miles.
It is #288.
It is US and California emissions compliant.
Maintenance:
The seller states: “I am a previously factory authorized Ducati technician, and earlier this year I did an in-depth 6 thousand mile service to the bike. The service included the basic tasks using only OEM parts as well as a long list of additional work that was required of a bike that sat idle for many years. The coolant system was flushed, and new catch tank filler o’ring installed. The fuel system was refurbished with new hoses inside of the tank, new filter, and new quick disconnect o’rings. Various other rubber parts, seals and o’rings throughout the bike were replaced, such as fuel tank hold-down rubber grommets front and rear, and many others items. 2 opening rocker arms were de-plating and a camshaft damaged. Those parts were all replaced. All valve collets and a few shims were replaced during the valve check and adjust. New cam belts were installed. The ECU showed signs of immanent failure and was also replaced with a good, used unit. It retains its original 996 chip. New battery, new tires. The clutch slave cylinder seal was replaced and the bore honed. The master cylinder had a minor leak and was replaced with a new Brembo unit while retaining the original lever.”
Modifications:
The seller states: “The original owner had it painted black by Bobby Keith in the SF Bay area shortly after acquiring it. The color change was done by choice and not because the bike had been damaged.” Other modifications include: Carbon fiber clutch cover, carbon fiber rear view mirrors, tinted windscreen, Remus carbon fiber “slip-on” exhaust system, a tidy rear fender eliminator bracket, side stand starter cut-out eliminator wire harness, and a Corbin seat.

It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax GP-A Pro tires with date codes of 2814 and 0415.
The sale includes one OEM key and one aftermarket key.
Cosmetic Blemishes: The seller states: “There is some transport damage in the form of a smudge in the paint on the left side panel, and touched-up scratches on the right side of the headlight fairing and the left rear corner of the tail piece. There are a few paint blemishes on the top of the fuel tank. There is mild corrosion on some of the plated fasteners, the engine’s painted surfaces, and aluminum parts. An old coolant leak has stained and corroded a few parts as well.”
