Following the success of Ducati’s V-Twin-powered racers in the World Superbike Championship, other major manufacturers followed suit by developing their own race-bred V-Twins. Suzuki’s first attempt at a performance-driven V-Twin model came in the form of the TL1000S in 1997, though the next year the Japanese marque would follow up the half-faired 1000S with the even racier TL1000R. “The concept behind the TL1000R is simple: Build a V-Twin with the potential to win Superbike races,” explained Hiroshi Moritake, who led the TL-R project.
The V-Twin motor was updated for the TLR, getting a revised ram-air-box, Mikuni electronic dual-injector throttle bodies, upgraded cams, forged pistons, beefier connecting rods, improved ignition timing, and a 1,000 rpm higher redline. The changes to the liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 996cc, 8V, DOHC, 90-degree V-Twin ultimately afforded the TLR a cool 135hp at 9,500 rpm and 78 ft-lbs of torque at 7,500 rpm. And despite the bump in performance, the V-Twin retained its reputation for bullet-proof reliability.
We love our TL-Rs here – in fact, the V-Twin-powered Suzuki has long been Adam’s favorite motorcycle. Motorcycle News said this of the bike “the Suzuki TL1000 is a sizzling superbike that features one of the truly great V-twin engines, in some of the most unpredictable handling chassis ever devised. The Suzuki TL1000R has an improved rear shock, which doesn’t misbehave so much as the TL1000S model’s, but both motorcycles get so light at the front end, so very easily with all that V-twin grunt on tap. The Suzuki TL1000R is exciting to ride, but for experts/nutters only.”
This example is VIN: JS1VT52A7Y2101854. The seller states “I came across this bike via the TL Fanatics Group on Facebook, a great group and true fanatics are found there. The story in the group chat was that a member new of a very low miles TL1000R that someone’s friend wanted to sell, I was taking a TL1000R to track days at the time and I jumped at the chance. When these bikes are dialed in they are incredibly fun and easy to ride. When I collected the bike it came with a sad story. It had sat for so many years because the original owner only put 364 miles on it before being deployed and sadly was killed on a mission, the bike sat from that day onward.”
The odometer shows 366 miles. The seller has covered only two miles during his ownership.
Maintenance:
The seller states “the bike had sat since 2000 when it was new with original 366 miles on it. The tank was in bad repair as well as the original bodywork. I replaced the tank, fuel pump, fuel injectors and fuel lines. New battery, new Dunlop tires that look nice and sticky for a road tire. New plugs, fluid changed, and new chain. It’s basically a brand new bike with a few blemishes.”
Modifications:
The seller states “the bodywork has been painted in “Barry Sheene” Heron Suzuki colors. The tank has been wrapped and then given a clear coat for extra protection. The silencers were a little scuffed from its time being stored and I replaced them with silencers from Dominator. The shorter silencer gives this throaty V-twin a gnarly race bike sound. I can provide the new owner with the old set on request. The bike comes with a solo seat as well as a duel seat to carry a passenger. Both color matching and a nice touch.”
It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax tires with date codes of 0624 and 3324.
The sale includes one ignition key and two fuel cap keys.
