After World War II, the Russians basically looted a BMW assembly line and installed it in their home country. The Ural plant gradually expanded into a gigantic Soviet collective-style factory producing every component of every bike, employing 10,000 people and producing upwards of 130,000 bikes a year for the domestic market.
They’ve been making unsanctioned Beemer replicas under the Ural name since the 1940s and the Ural Bavarian Classic (or BC) at least pays homage to that fact in name. It came with a 649cc engine and was capable of a 65mph top speed, roughly 15mph faster than previous models. 2000 also saw the implementation of a new telescopic fork in place of the Earles-type used prior.
