Description

Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 2001 Yamaha YZF600R.

The increasing popularity of the World Superbike Championship in the 80s and 90s was responsible for the introduction of over-the-counter road bikes boasting specifications aimed squarely at the racetrack. In 1989, the four-valve Yamaha FZR600 was introduced with its engine slanted forward in the frame. This was the basis of the Genesis engine and Deltabox frame concept, and helped centralize mass and lower the center of gravity.

This layout allowed the real fuel tank to sit behind the cylinders, low between the frame rails. Forward of this sat the airbox, with four 32mm Mikuni downdraft carburetors, all these assemblies were covered by a plastic cover dummy gas tank.

In 1994, Yamaha offered up a successor to the FZR in North America: the YZF600R. It retained major mechanical components such as the engine, transmission, suspension and Deltabox frame. The 599cc inline-four made 87 hp at 11,500 rpm and 44 ft-lb. of torque at 9,500, while the bike weighed 453 pounds dry. Though that might seem like a bit too much weight and little power for today’s 600-class standards, the YZF nevertheless clocked a very respectable quarter-mile time of 11.33 seconds at 120.78 mph. More telling of the time, it won the AMA 600 Supersport championship in 1994 with Jamie James at the bars.

Cycle World named it the Best 600cc Streetbike of 1996 because it was enjoyable in the real world, not just on racetracks. That logic extended to why Cycle World would also go onto call it a Best Used Bike and why it lasted so long in Yamaha’s lineup (until 2007), even while track enthusiasts flocked to the R6.

This example is VIN: JYA5AHE0X1A026302. The seller purchased the bike in 2022 and states, “Bought it from my father in law, in Ohio who bought it from the original owner. Sounds like the original owner only rode it briefly and had dropped it apparently at very low speed since it has minimal damage, and must have stopped riding it. It’s always been stored inside a garage. I’ve kept it registered etc and just push it out and start it regularly. Sometimes take it around the neighborhood. But ready for it to go. If it doesn’t sell here I’ll just start riding it. But thought it might find someone that really likes this bike. I never owned one when they were new as I had others, F2’s F3’s, R1, R6, etc.”

During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 100 miles. The odometer shows 817 miles.

Maintenance:
Per the seller, “Cleaned carburetors numerous times as they kept gumming up. Finally just bought carb rebuild kit, due to O-rings needing replaced. Changed oil and coolant. Keeping battery on tender.”

Modifications:
According to the seller, the bike is stock.

Inside of the tank:

It is riding on Bridgestone Battlax tires with date codes of 4000 and 4000.

The sale includes two keys.

Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“Some small scapes on right side. Fender very lower tip, fairing lower and engine cover, very small on exhaust, turn signal scraped and mount area of fender cracked.”
