Buell’s XB frame first arrived on the scene in 2002 with the launch of the Firebolt XB9R.

The series introduced many of the brand’s innovative technologies: an industry-first Zero Torsional Load (ZTL) perimeter floating front brake disc, a forged aluminum “fuel in frame” chassis (built by Verlicchi), as well as a swingarm that doubled as an oil reservoir.

In order to keep the bike’s mass even closer to the ground, Buell mounted the muffler beneath the engine.

Said engine was a 984cc V-Twin derived from the Harley-Davidson Sportster producing 78 horsepower and 62 foot-pounds of torque.

The Firebolt ushered in impressive changes in Buell’s lineup – as Motorcycle.com put it: “the new frame and suspension components make this the best handling Buell ever. It just may be time to trash a few of the misconceptions you have about Buells of yore. This new Firebolt is a serious bike that is a huge step forward from anything they’ve produced ever before.”
