Kawasaki first introduced the Z1000 in 2003 as a celebration of its legendary Z1 from the 1970s. An all-new model, the bike combined a classic naked platform with modern, angular styling — a marked departure for the company whose lineup had otherwise begun to stagnate.
The Z1000’s sporty looks were penned by Shunji Tanaka, a former Mazda designer responsible for the Miata refresh. When paired with a set of paint-color-matched wheel and a similar tail to the ZX6R, it gave the bike a decidedly more euro-centric aesthetic.
Underneath Z1000’s fresh bodywork, Kawasaki opted for the same tried and true 900cc inline-four as used in the ZX-9R. Funneled through a pair of distinctive dual exhaust pipes, it put down 127hp at 10,000rpm with its 70.5lb-ft of torque coming in slightly earlier at 8,000rpm. An inverted front fork, aluminum swingarm and good geometry made the bike a very sharp handler, especially in tighter city conditions which made it a very popular choice as a daily rider and commuter.
As VisorDown said in their review: “From speedy backroad hustling and stunty showboating to crosstown moody posing and even a bit of distance or two-up trundling, all of these are within easy reach on the big Z.”
