Description

Today we have a piece of race histoy – the Factory Yamaha Racing 2003 R6 bike from the AMA 600 Supersport class. This is the actual race bike belonging to Jamie “The Hacker” Hacking from his legendary 2003 championship season. Hacking is a British born, three time AMA champion, who began his career in 1997 with Kinkos Kawasaki. In 1998 he moved to a full factory Yamaha ride and subsequently won AMA Superbike rookie of the year despite being injured for part of the season. In 2003 he won his first AMA Supersport championship and this was his B bike, some of those podiums were on this very machine.

Yamaha has been in the 600cc sportbike game since the introduction of the XJ600 in 1984. Come 1998, however, the company redefined the 600cc supersport class with the introduction of the all-new YZF-R6. Designed as a middleweight version of the then-freshly-released R1, and offered as a higher-performance alternative to the YZF600R, the R6 featured a remarkable alloy frame and swing-arm and was powered by an inline-four that was the first 200hp-per-liter engine on a production 600.

And here’s the thing: since its inception, the R6 has been a popular platform for amateur and professional racers alike. 2003 saw the platform’s first update and brought the model fuel injection, improved swingarm and aluminium frame, and a slight headlight redesign along with better aerodynamics.

Jamie Hacking’s 2003 year was a standout season and one of the best of his racing career. After his contracted ended with Suzuki, he went back to Yamaha for the AMA Supersport Championship. This proved to be an excellent decision, as Hacking fit better on the bike, had great chemistry with the team, and won the AMA Supersport Championship that year, securing four victories and three additional podiums. By the end of the season, he had established himself as one of the top riders in AMA Supersport.

Manufactured December 2002, this example is VIN: JYARJ06E93A000306. The bike came from Factory Yamaha and Jamie says, “This bike was my B bike I raced through out the 2003 Honda Pro Oils AMA Supersport class in 2003. This is the actual bike that I raced the day of winning my first ever AMA Championship at Barber Motorsports park in Birmingham Virginia. The bike is as is I rode it that day from down to the tires to the #1 decals that got stuck on as we where at the podium by my team over the #2 that I normally ran.”

There is no odometer, true mileage unknown. Per Jamie, “The lap timer still has all of the tracks loaded in it and will have all of my lap times from each track.”
