First shown to the world in the 1997 Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, the BMW R1200C was Germany’s attempt to break into the cruiser market:
In the mid 90’s, BMW was using a 1,100cc boxer engine for almost all of their R-series bikes. When they bumped up capacity, the first bike to receive the 1,200cc engine was the cruiser and not best-selling models like the GS or RT.
Producing 61 horsepower and 72 pound feet of torque, power wasn’t an issue, but the boxer motor was quite different than the V-Twins that dominated Harley and the Japanese Harley clones.
Over the course of the R1200C’s production life, BMW expanded the lineup to include upgraded models such as the CL and the CLC. With the designations came road-trip-ready features like a full fairing, heated grips, ABS, lockable saddlebags, and cruise control. Assuming you went for the latter, you also got heated seats for two and a radio complete with a CD player. As if that wasn’t enough, BMW also specced the bike with rider floorboards, a heel-toe shifter, and two 12V power sockets.
Manufactured September 2003, this example is VIN: WB10496A74ZJ31501. The seller has owned the bike for 13 years. He states that “I am only the third owner. I bought it in 2009 from San Diego BMW motorcycles and traded it in at Irv Seaver Motorcycles in Orange county in 2011. The second owner sold it back to me earlier this year.Compared to the base model, the CL version features a full fairing, a tachometer and analog-style clock, an extended rake, larger alloy wheels, two additional vertically-stacked high-beam headlights, and cruise control. Other notable features represented are rider floorboards, a heel/toe shifter, a six-speed transmission with sixth gear overdrive, an oversized passenger seat, two 12V power sockets, heated grips and seats, side-mounted hard panniers with dash controlled AM/FM stereo and rear pannier CD player, a removable top case with a passenger backrest. The top case swallows a full helmet and can be unbolted in a snap.”
During his ownership, the seller has covered approximately 7,000 miles. The odometer shows 37,468 miles. Per the seller, “This is an exceptionally well cared for and clean 2004 BMW R1200 CLC. The bodywork sports a sapphire black metallic finish which is in excellent condition even after 20 years which is a testament to its owner’s care to ensure its always garaged when not ridden.”
