The S4R marked an evolution of more power, less weight, and a new front end for the Ducati Monster range. When first introduced in 2002, the Ducati S4 set the highest performance standard for a modern naked bike. The success of this model led to the birth of the entire Ducati Monster S4 range, including the S4R and S4RS.
The S4R was new for 2004, and Motorcyclist magazine called it “the meanest Monster ever.” The motor was the 996cc desmo unit from the 996 superbike with a few tweaks for more streetability – peak power was 113 horses, 12 more than the S4.
The front end features radial mount Brembo calipers and fully adjustable inverted Showa forks. The rear suspension boasts a fully adjustable Sachs shock with integrated reservoir and full rear ride height adjustability. In addition, the motorcycle shed almost 10 pounds of dry weight, which all combines to make the S4R an incredibly versatile and agile street fighter.
The S4R has the traditional clean lines that define the Monster family, and retained the twin vertically stacked shotgun style silencers and aluminum alloy single-sided swing-arm.
This 2004 Ducati Monster S4R (VIN: ZDM1RB5TX4B040013) spent the last 15 years in the back of a garage in Hollywood.
The odometer shows 848 miles. Last month, this bike was serviced at MetrikMoto. It “received new belts, fluids, plugs, filters and a valve adjustment.” The only known issue is that the fuel light is currently on all of the time. This is due to a bad sending unit in the tank – the part is on back order due to COVID-19.
There are several aftermarket upgrades, including:
Evolution clutch slave cylinder.
Carbon/Magnesium Dymag wheels.
Aftermarket remote reservoir shock.
Vortex levers and Puig billet mirrors.
Carbon fiber headlight bucket.
Steel braided lines and Brembo radial mount calipers.
Several carbon fiber pieces: front fender, side panels, belly pan, chain guard, and engine guard.
Ducati Performance carbon steering damper.
Arrow carbon fiber exhaust (please note some scratches on the emblem).
Aftermarket open clutch cover.
Cosmetic flaws are limited to scratches on the left side of tank and a chip in the rear seat cowl.
Please note that this bike has California plates on it solely for photo purposes – it is on a clean Colorado title. Got any Monster stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the comments below.
