Before BMW introduced the RT in 1978, a rider who wanted to tour had to buy a bike and then slap on the usual accessories like a fairing and bags. The RT was a revelation in that you could just sign the paperwork at your dealership and then immediately put on your break-in mileage in a few days as you explored the US!
The model has evolved tremendously over the years, and it’s become a perennial favorite of touring enthusiasts and police officers alike due to the combination of performance and technology, especially the Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear suspension, cruise control, electrically adjustable screen, and side bags. Plus, it wouldn’t be a BMW touring bike without heated grips!
BMW completely revamped the model for 2005 with an update to the R1150RT. As MCN said, it “was one of the surprise highlights of BMW’s 2005 motorcycle range. It was not only faster and lighter, the ergonomics and handling package is excellent too. Not just a great tourer, a great motorcycle, period.”
The new motor churned out 110 hp, a 16 percent boost over its predecessor — and boosted torque to 85 ft-lbs at 6,000 rpm.
