Like its bigger, more powerful sibling — the 999 — the Ducati 749 was characterized by its distinctive (read: divisive) styling. Penned by Pierre Terblanche, it featured a set of stacked headlights and beefy slab-sided fairing panels that made for a marked departure from its predecessor: the much-adored and ever-classic 748.

Looks aside, the 749 was certainly no slouch from a performance standpoint. It employed many of the same parts as the 999, and even the base model wasn’t that far off from the claimed figures of the previous 916. Of course, the smaller engine couldn’t match that of the roaring 999, but the middleweight Ducati offered a satisfying high-revving riding experience with a characteristically Italian soundtrack.

And here’s the thing: out of the gate, the S version offered a sizeable upgrade in power and torque compared to the standard model. Never content to settle, however, Ducati updated the bike in 2005 to give it even more grunt, fitting it with larger valves such that it made some 116bhp with 60.8lb-ft. of torque.

This example is VIN: ZDM1UB3SX5B010018.

The seller has owned the bike for 15 years, during which time he has added approximately 19,400 miles to the total count. The odometer shows 21,200 miles.

Maintenance:
The seller states that he has kept up with regular maintenance — including a total of three valve adjustments — through Beverly Hills Ducati, Mach1 Costa Mesa, and CM Motorsports.

He has provided a receipt from Riders Revelation from July 2018 for a service that included new CA-Cycle Works belts, new grips, fluid flush, oil/filter change, spark plugs, and new fork seals/fork oil. The bike had 20,000 miles (1,200 miles ago) when that service was performed.

In preparation for the listing, the seller had us detail the bike. Angel did the work, he notes that the brakes are at 80% front/rear and that the hydraulic fluid, coolant, headlight, taillight, killswitch, and horn are OK. He also notes that the oil is dark, the front right turn signal does not flash, and that the rear brake may need to be flushed.
