Description
Today we have something truly iconic on offer – the Factory Yamaha Racing 2006 R1 Limited Edition bike from the AMA Superstock class. This is the actual race bike belonging to Jamie “the Hacker” Hacking from his legendary 2006 championship season. Hacking is a British born, three time AMA champion, who began his career in 1997 with Kinkos Kawasaki. In 1998 he moved to a full factory Yamaha ride and subsequently won AMA Superbike rookie of the year despite being injured for part of the season. In 2003 he won the AMA Supersport championship taking 4 race wins and 3 additional podiums. He nearly won the championship again in 2004 and was narrowly edged out in the AMA Superstock class as well that year. This bike is being listed together with Jamie’s 2006 R6 and he thought a collector might like to keep the two bikes as a pair.
Graves Motorsports started in Van Nuys California in 1990, as both an aftermarket parts manufacturer as well as a professional road racing team both supplying privateer racers with factory-quality, race-proven performance parts as well as setting the example for race teams with their mission statement “craftsmanship leads to championships.” Graves Motorsports is lead by Chuck Graves, a wrench-man, turned racer who built and modified an 1100cc motor and dropped it into a 750 race bike to compete in the Willow Springs unlimited Formula USA class. He quickly made the podium and went on to win against factory supported bikes in the National class. Chuck went on to sign with the Valvoline sponsored team and won the Formula USA national championship. The Graves website states “At racing events it’s impossible to determine where Team Yamaha ends and Graves Motorsports begins. And that’s by design. The first minute I was at Yamaha I felt at home. Our combined teams are like a Swiss watch, running smooth. We have the best riders, the best team, the best equipment, and those are just the facts.”
To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Yamaha took their incredibly popular 1000cc sportbike and modified just 500 examples into near-production racers. This bike is #000 of the 500 unit production run.
For the production run of Limited Edition R1s Yamaha paid homage to Kenny Roberts and the original Yamaha racing colors with the lovely yellow/black/white ‘speedblock’ paint. This particular bike, however, may be the only 2006 R1 LE draped in Factory Yamaha racing blue.
In 2006 Hacking won both the Supersport and the Superstock AMA classes for Graves Factory Yamaha. This was an incredible feat that hadn’t been done in over twenty years at the time he won it. Jamiehacking.com said “Hacking is only the second man ever to win both classes. Doug Polen was the first, way back in 1988.” Hacking said of his victory “I don’t even know what to say. It hasn’t been done in twenty years and it could be another twenty years (before it happens again). To take two completely different motorcycles like that, different ccs, weight differences, brake markers, acceleration… it’s really hard to do. I just shows how well I’ve ridden, and it shows how well my guys have prepared my bikes to make the switchover as easy as possible. Yamaha has put us in a position to be the top of the class in both classes.” Truly an outstanding racer, Hacking went on to ride in MotoGP in 2008 for one race, standing in for John Hopkins on a works Kawasaki MotoGP bike, he raced Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and took home 11th place.
This example is VIN: JYARN15E16A000011. The seller states “This bike was the actual bike I campaigned in the 2006 AMA 1000 Superstock class. I won numerous races on this bike and never finished lower than second all year. I won the Championship on the bike a race early and took the #1 plate at my home track in Road Atlanta.
As a race bike there is no odometer, however the bike does come with a data logger that has all of Jamie’s lap times from the different tracks he raced throughout the season.
Maintenance:
This bike was professionally maintained by the Graves Yamaha Race team and has since been stored at Factory Yamaha and has not required any maintenance.
Modifications:
Front and rear Öhlins suspension – developed by the same team that took care of the Yamaha MotoGP bike of the time. The seller states “This bike was so good that we never changed one shock setting all year long after pre season testing, other that some clicker changes through out the year that was it.”
Marchesini forged aluminum wheels designed specifically for this bike.
AiM data logging unit with all of the lap times from the 2006 AMA season at all of the racetrack venues.
Custom carbon fiber exhaust heat shield. Jamie states he “burned his boots too many times and had his race engineer Chuck craft this heat shield specially for him.”
It is riding on Dunlop Radial slicks tires which have aged out with date codes of 4005. Per the seller, these are identical to the spec tires from the 2006 racing season. Although they aren’t the tires that were on the bike when he won, they are the same spec as the tires from the Factory Yamaha Race team.
The sale includes no keys. As a race bike it is push button start only.
