Yamaha has been in the 600cc sportbike game since the introduction of the XJ600 in 1984. Come 1998, however, the company redefined the 600cc supersport class with the introduction of the all-new YZF-R6. Designed as a middleweight version of the then-freshly-released R1, and offered as a higher-performance alternative to the YZF600R, the R6 featured a remarkable alloy frame and swing-arm and was powered by an inline-four that was the first 200hp-per-liter engine on a production 600.
And here’s the thing: since its inception, the R6 has been a popular platform for amateur and professional racers alike. 2003 brought the model fuel injection, while later updates in 2006 gave it ride-by-wire throttle and a slipper clutch. Of course, over the years, Yamaha also improved the aesthetics and the aerodynamics with styling cues borrowed from the R1.
Like its older sibling, the R6 also got treated to a special edition paint scheme in celebration of the company’s 50th Anniversary. The livery paid tribute to Kenny Roberts and the marque’s factory racing colors, and it also sported a set of black wheels with yellow pinstriping.
