Description
Today we have something truly iconic on offer – the Factory Yamaha Racing 2006 R6 bike from the AMA 600 Supersport class. This is the actual race bike belonging to Jamie “The Hacker” Hacking from his legendary 2006 championship season. Hacking is a British born, three time AMA champion, who began his career in 1997 with Kinkos Kawasaki. In 1998 he moved to a full factory Yamaha ride and subsequently won AMA Superbike rookie of the year despite being injured for part of the season. In 2003 he won the AMA Supersport championship taking 4 race wins and 3 additional podiums. He nearly won the championship again in 2004 and was narrowly edged out in the AMA Superstock class as well that year. This bike is being listed together with Jamie’s 2006 R1 LE and he thought a collector might like to keep the two bikes as a pair.
Yamaha has been in the 600cc sportbike game since the introduction of the XJ600 in 1984. Come 1998, however, the company redefined the 600cc supersport class with the introduction of the all-new YZF-R6. Designed as a middleweight version of the then-freshly-released R1, and offered as a higher-performance alternative to the YZF600R, the R6 featured a remarkable alloy frame and swing-arm and was powered by an inline-four that was the first 200hp-per-liter engine on a production 600.
And here’s the thing: since its inception, the R6 has been a popular platform for amateur and professional racers alike. 2003 brought the model fuel injection, while later updates in 2006 gave it ride-by-wire throttle and a slipper clutch. Of course, over the years, Yamaha also improved the aesthetics and the aerodynamics with styling cues borrowed from the R1.
In 2006 Hacking won both the Supersport and the Superstock AMA classes for Graves Factory Yamaha. This was an incredible feat that hadn’t been done in over twenty years at the time he won it. Jamiehacking.com said “Hacking is only the second man ever to win both classes. Doug Polen was the first, way back in 1988.” Hacking said of his victory “I don’t even know what to say. It hasn’t been done in twenty years and it could be another twenty years (before it happens again). To take two completely different motorcycles like that, different ccs, weight differences, brake markers, acceleration… it’s really hard to do. I just shows how well I’ve ridden, and it shows how well my guys have prepared my bikes to make the switchover as easy as possible. Yamaha has put us in a position to be the top of the class in both classes.” Truly an outstanding racer, Hacking went on to ride in MotoGP in 2008 for one race, standing in for John Hopkins on a works Kawasaki MotoGP bike, he raced Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and took home 11th place.
Manufactured in December 2005 this example is VIN: JYARJ12YX6A000020. Jamie has owned this bike since he won the championship on it in 2006. It has been professionally dry stored by Factory Yamaha since then.
This is a race bike and as such there is no odometer. The true mileage is unknown. Jamie states “This was the actual race bike I campaigned while racing in the 2006 Pro Honda Oils Supersort class. This actual bike won numerous races in 2006 with a win streak of over 10 races that year. This bike never finished any lower than second during that year. The AMA tech stickers on the bike are stacked up from that win streak. My mechanic would not take them of until we lost. He ended up just leaving them stacked up.”
