Borne of the the storied legacy Benelli had in Italian craftmanship and innovation, the original Tornado Tre was first released in 2002 as a stark contrast to the up-and-coming Japanese superbikes. The Tre – as the name suggested – featured an inline-three cylinder engine that was known for more than just high-revving power, it offered plenty of low-end grunt that was sorely missed in most inline-fours. Looking to build off the success of the original Tornado, Benelli announced the 1190 for 2006.
The most notable features that set the Tornado apart were the engine and the racing-derived frame. Benelli took great strides to build a highly rigid steel trellis frame, which kept weight down while offering exceptional handling as well as stability. Pair this with Marzocchi forks and a Sachs shock in the rear, and it was no wonder Benelli made an impact in the industry with their Tornado. As for the engine, the inline-three put on some weight, bumping the original 900 all the way up to a hefty 1130cc, good for roughly 137 horsepower and 86 ft-lb of torque.
Beyond the performance numbers, the newest Tornado came sporting new and improved EFI which greatly improved the fueling over the previous model. Benelli was not quite ready to sit back on their laurels just yet, as they released an exclusive 1 of 1 model for 2007 – the Tourist Trophy edition. Meant to commemorate 100 years of the world’s deadliest road-race, the TT edition of the Tornado came sporting carbon fiber throughout and was made with a distinct and eye-catching red and black livery, with TT accents across the entirety of the bodywork.
