After approximately a decade and a half with the GSX-R1100 being the top of the Gixxer lineup, Suzuki introduced the all-new GSX-R1000 for 2001. Journalists felt it was the first bike to compete with Yamaha’s revolutionary R1 of 1998, and Suzuki was able to top the R1 with less weight and more power (374 pound dry weight, 160 hp/81 lb-ft at the crank).

2007, saw significant upgrades for the model. Although 14 pounds heavier than the previous year, due to a new exhaust for emission regulations, this weight was offset by improved aerodynamics, lighter throttle body, and faster revving engine.

Suzuki also added handlebar controlled ECU mapping configurations, and a new hydraulic clutch. Rider Magazine praised the new model saying, “The 2007 Suzuki GSX-R1000 just may be the best thing to happen to sport-touring motorcycles since the saddlebag.” You can read their full road test review here
