After approximately a decade and a half with the GSX-R1100 being the top of the Gixxer lineup, Suzuki introduced the all-new GSX-R1000 for 2001. Journalists felt it was the first bike to compete with Yamaha’s revolutionary R1 of 1998, and Suzuki was able to top the R1 with less weight and more power (374 pound dry weight, 160 hp/81 lb-ft at the crank).
That also made it quick successful on the track, as AMA decided to open up the Superbike series to 1000cc production bikes for the 2003 season. Mat would win the championship that year, making him was the first rider to win 4 AMA Superbike Championships. To celebrate that fact, Suzuki released a limited edition of the GSX-R1000 in his honor. “Complete in all of its Yoshimura Suzuki livery, the limited edition GSX-R1000 accurate replicates the look of Mladin’s championship winning machine, including Mat Mladin’s signature and four AMA number one plates on the fuel tank.”
