Aprilia’s SXV550 was an absolute monster that journalists fell in love with as soon as it was released – Visor Down said “only nutters need apply”.
It’s a supermoto with a powerful V-Twin, excellent components, and race-bred pedigree: the bike had already won the S2 World Supermoto Championship as a prototype before it was released to the world. Unfortunately, early (2007) bikes had serious issues with the sealant used in the engine cases. If spotted quickly, you could reseal the motor and everything would be fine. If not, water would get into the oil and you’d be looking at a V-Twin paperweight. Thankfully, Aprilia had sorted it out by 2008, and customers were rewarded with a full-on race bike that was somehow street legal.
The Aprilia was a revolution in the world of supermoto, ditching the traditional single for a beefy V-Twin that popped out a staggering 70 horsepower at 10,500 rpm for a bike that weighed about 280 pounds! MCN said it was “going to change the way the world thinks about supermotos forever.”
The trade-off was service intervals, as the race maintenance schedule called for new pistons and a shim check after 60 hours. Regular street riding would increase that number by several factors, however. What else would you expect from a race bike with lights?
This example is VIN: ZD4VSU50X8S000267. The seller purchased the bike two years ago and states, “I believe I am the 3rd owner. Owner 1 put 1,500ish miles on it, 2nd owner put 200ish miles on it, and I put 1,500ish miles on it. It’s a light and fun bike to zip around town or your neighborhood on. I would like to keep it and all the others I sold (Aprilia RS125, Ducati 1200S Monster, Buell XB9, GSX-R600) but I can’t keep them all and I want an Aprilia RS250, RG500 and RZ500.”
The odometer shows 3,242 miles.
Maintenance:
Per the seller, “No mechanical issues. It may take 3 short cranks to start if it has sat for a while. Changed oil and filter every 500 miles, lube the chain. I flushed brake fluid and coolant spring 2024. I put a new clutch cable on the bike and I have a new one for backup. Replaced front brake switch. The rims will need to be trued up, that’s why I got the spokes and nipples. I was going to do that when it needed tires. The rims are not damaged but they are not perfectly straight. I put the passenger foot pegs on it and the small aftermarket turn signals on it. The dash is cracked around the cable holder area. There is hand written paper work on some maintenance one of the owners did.”
Modifications:
Acerbis hand guards. LED front turn signals.
Not shown: Battery tender lead.
It is riding on Dunlop Sportmax tires with date codes of 3916 and 4916.
The sale includes two keys, extra clutch cable, front fairing, various take off parts.
Cosmetic Blemishes: please see the album up top for all known cosmetic blemishes. Here is a selection:
“It is missing the fuse block cover. A little rusty on some bolts. It had some scuffs on the left side from a drop or low side. I polished all the scratches out. Nothing was broken just light scuff.”
