11-23-25 Update: The seller has provided documentation for the service mentioned in the “Maintenance” section, we have added it below.
Built for homologation purposes, the 1098R was Ducati’s entry into World Superbike. It brought back something from the past (side by side headlights, à la the 916) and introduced something new – the first implementation of electronic traction control on a production street bike.

Bike Social calls it a Future Classic, saying “in many ways it is the last of the ‘proper’ Ducati homologation specials. That is to say it bears absolutely no resemblance to the road bike it is meant to be based on! Capacity, engine, chassis, just about every component on the 1098R when compared to the 1098 road bike was altered as Ducati needed to get back into winning ways.”

They weren’t kidding – despite the “1098” name and the 1,099cc motor in the regular 1098 model, the 1098R engine displaces 1,198cc thanks to increases in both bore and stroke. The Italians utilized titanium for the connecting rods and the (larger) valves, a slipper clutch, strengthened rocker arms, magnesium cam covers, lighter pistons…you get the idea. Just like some “R” specials before it, the 1098 gets Ohlins suspension/steering damper, carbon fiber bodywork, and upgraded Brembo brakes.

You also get Marchesini wheels, a magnesium front subframe, and the novel eight-stage traction control. The price for “the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle ever built”? $40,000.

This example is VIN: ZDM1XBHWX8B016103.

The seller is the original owner. He bought it new from Marin Speed Shop in San Rafael, California. “Purchased the bike new from dealer to ride some the great winding roads through California Wine Country. Has been a fantastic bike with lots of power and great attention getter wherever it goes. Never been track ridden or abused. I’m a collector and have many bikes and cars. I just don’t have time to enjoy it and want it to go to someone else who can.”
Maintenance:
Completed major service on 07/19/25 at Marin Speed Ducati including timing belts, all fluids, and full system check. The seller states there are no known mechanical issues: the “bike just had major service. Original tires have been left on bike and have lots of tread but have obviously timed out.”

Modifications:
“Termignoni exhaust installed by dealer when purchased new.”

It is riding on the original Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires from 2007.

The sale includes one key, the code card, aftermarket tank bag, and the stock exhaust.

Cosmetic Blemishes:
“There is a crack in the front fairing in front of the drivers side mirror from it falling over onto something from standing. Was not moving when it occurred. Otherwise, bike is in excellent condition expected with the mileage.”

Currently located in Calistoga, California, this Ducati is offered on a clean California title on Planned Non-Operation (PNO) registration so there are no back fees.

The California DMV estimates that it would cost $224 to make registration current through July of 2026.
