Built for homologation purposes, the 1098R was Ducati’s entry into World Superbike. It brought back something from the past (side by side headlights, à la the 916) and introduced something new – the first implementation of electronic traction control on a production street bike.
Bike Social calls it a Future Classic, saying “in many ways it is the last of the ‘proper’ Ducati homologation specials. That is to say it bears absolutely no resemblance to the road bike it is meant to be based on! Capacity, engine, chassis, just about every component on the 1098R when compared to the 1098 road bike was altered as Ducati needed to get back into winning ways.”
They weren’t kidding – despite the “1098” name and the 1,099cc motor in the regular 1098 model, the 1098R engine displaces 1,198cc thanks to increases in both bore and stroke. The Italians utilized titanium for the connecting rods and the (larger) valves, a slipper clutch, strengthened rocker arms, magnesium cam covers, lighter pistons…you get the idea. Just like some “R” specials before it, the 1098 gets Ohlins suspension/steering damper, carbon fiber bodywork, and upgraded Brembo brakes.
You also get Marchesini wheels, a magnesium front subframe, and the novel eight-stage traction control. The price for “the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle ever built”? $40,000.
This example (VIN: ZDM1XBHW48B015884) is #115 of the 450 that were sold in the US. The original owner sold it on Iconic Motorbike Auctions in May 2021 to the current owner.
The current owner has covered just three miles – the odometer shows 3,574 miles. He is letting it go to make room for the Yamaha R7 he just acquired from us.
The original owner had Moto Corse Performance build it when new with the following upgrades:
MPL Tuningparts Clutch Slave Cylinder.
Carbon fiber rear hugger and swingarm guard.
Carbon fiber clutch cover and exhaust heel guard, Woodcraft rearsets and brake lever.
Carbon fiber radiator front cover.
Carbon fiber-covered mirrors with integrated turn signals.
Clear protective film on the front fairing.
Ryder Clips rubber shift sock boot.
NCR clip-ons, Ducati Performance Red CNC fork adjusters, Rizoma levers, aftermarket bar ends, and Mad Duc reservoir covers.
Not pictured is a carbon fiber water pump cover. None of the stock parts are included – the sale also comes with the code card.
Cosmetic Blemishes:
Tiny scratch on the top of the tank next to the “1” logo.
One of the gold stripes on the tail is darker than the other. The right side tail was repainted, apparently due to boot scuffs from getting on and off the bike.
The bike runs strong- before it went to the current owner we replaced the belts, flushed all the fluids, and installed a new battery plus Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa with date codes of 3519 and 3218.
Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment for an inspection), this Ducati is offered on a clean Florida title.
