Description

Click here for an CycleVIN Motorcycle History Report on this 2008 Ducati 1098R. Per the report, this bike was impounded in Arizona in October of 2016. The seller notes that this was due to an arrest by an overzealous cop on a spirited ride while visiting his father. Additional photos are available here for your perusal.

Built for homologation purposes, the 1098R was Ducati’s entry into World Superbike. It brought back something from the past (side by side headlights, à la the 916) and introduced something new – the first implementation of electronic traction control on a production street bike.

Bike Social calls it a Future Classic, saying “in many ways it is the last of the ‘proper’ Ducati homologation specials. That is to say it bears absolutely no resemblance to the road bike it is meant to be based on! Capacity, engine, chassis, just about every component on the 1098R when compared to the 1098 road bike was altered as Ducati needed to get back into winning ways.”

They weren’t kidding – despite the “1098” name and the 1,099cc motor in the regular 1098 model, the 1098R engine displaces 1,198cc thanks to increases in both bore and stroke. The Italians utilized titanium for the connecting rods and the (larger) valves, a slipper clutch, strengthened rocker arms, magnesium cam covers, lighter pistons…you get the idea. Just like some “R” specials before it, the 1098 gets Ohlins suspension/steering damper, carbon fiber bodywork, and upgraded Brembo brakes.

You also get Marchesini wheels, a magnesium front subframe, and the novel eight-stage traction control. The price for “the most powerful twin-cylinder motorcycle ever built”? $40,000.

This example (VIN: ZDM1XBHW18B015891) is #129 of the 450 that were sold in the US.

The seller acquired it in 2015 from a BMW dealership in Denver. He jokes, “I went in to buy a shirt, and bought a bike instead. When I saw the 1098R, I had to have it.” At the time, the bike had 950 miles. The odometer now shows 3,620 miles.

Eight months ago the seller had the fork seals replaced and new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires installed (date codes: 2118 front/0518 rear).

It is equipped with a Termignoni exhaust.

The seller is 6’4″ so he had the ride height adjusted.

This Ducati is in impressive cosmetic condition. We note a small scratch in the carbon fiber front fender, some scratches on the heel guards, and a couple of very minor rock chips.

The sale includes 2 keys, the owner’s manual, and the Ducati Data Analyzer. Our new in-house certified Ducati techs went through the bike and found that the rear rotor and pads are in need of replacement, those parts are on the way and they will be taken care of before the new owner picks it up or takes delivery.

Currently located at our facility in Santa Monica, California (please make an appointment if you’d like to inspect it), this 1098R is offered on a clean Texas title. Have any 1098R stories or questions about this listing? Let us know in the comments below!
