Multistrada is Italian for “many roads”, and that reflects the broad capabilities that Ducati and Pierre Terblanche envisioned within the bike — it was their attempt at a tourer that you could hustle through the twisties. As MCN put it, “On face value, the Ducati Multistrada 1000DS shouldn’t work – monster trailie motorcycle dimensions and posture mixed with street brakes and tyres should equal boingy mess – but it does, thanks to clean sheet design and street calibrated suspension. Overall it slaughters other ‘upright’ motorcycles.” And the praise didn’t stop there; Cycle World called the S model the Best Sport-Touring Bike of 2005, praising not just the breadth of its capabilities, but also how much fun it was. “The Bologna Boys have built the sport-bagger we would most like to spend extended weekends aboard exploring endless backroads.”
Come 2007, Ducati replaced the Multistrada’s 1,000cc engine with an 1,100cc block good for 93hp and 105lb-ft of torque. Though the standard model boasted a set of Marzocchi forks up front and a Sachs shock at the rear, the upgraded S model featured fully adjustable Öhlins all-around.
In spite of the Multistrada 1100’s promise and impressive spec sheet, though, it wasn’t typically Ducati in its aesthetic appeal. Lucky for you, the bike being offered today is a far-sight different to your usual Italian tourer!
This example is VIN: ZDM1YACPX8B005982. The seller acquired the donor Multistrada and Hypermotard frame from a private party approximately five years ago. If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you’ll recognize this bike from our first Rhode Island event!
Per the seller, the bike has seen approximately 200 miles since it was completed. The odometer shows zero miles. However, true mileage is unknown.
Maintenance:
In transforming the stock Multistrada into the custom you see before you, the seller performed a complete rebuild with a donor Hypermotard frame. We’ve included some details from his write-up below. Please refer to the included album in the ‘Photos’ tab to appreciate the full extent of the project.
“The unique ‘minimalist’ bodywork is a combination of modified Ducati race bike parts and owner-built aluminum pieces. The owner-designed color scheme was painted by Robbie Nigl of Peach Pit Painting using a combination of gloss and matte finishes. This Labor of Love build took over three years and thousand of hours to complete. It rides and sounds fantastic and feels like a 120 hp dirt bike. It has road race tires now but could easily be fitted with chunky adv. tires to blast fire roads or dirt track tires for sliding sideways! You’ll never see another one like it.”
A custom wiring harness has been fabricated and discreetly connects a Motogadget M unit to the customLED lights and 3d-printed one-off switch gear. The M-unit is fully programmable for lighting and kill switch, alarm, etc. There are no fuses or relays with solid state M unit which really reduces the amount of the wiring needed, keeping the motorcycle clean with a see-through engine compartment highlighting the trellis framed V-twin and carbon fiber belt covers. The long travel Öhlins suspension in front and remotely adjustable rear Öhlins shock works well giving the machine a dirt-bike or supermotard feel and stance. The tall Sargent custom saddle affords a comfortable reach to the slightly rearset grippy pegs.
Engine – Ducati Hyperstrada 1100 Ds Evo crankcase, balanced & blueprinted by Bruce Meyers of Meyers Performance with professionaly coated cases and covers. Intake converted to Mikuni 42mm flatslide carburetors with revised jetting featuring individual air cleaner pods-and trick TPS sensor. Hand built stainless steel exhaust featuring individual header pipes ending in two reverse cone mufflers. Tailored to mimic the dirt track racers of the past. Ignition system consists of a fully programable Ignitech module mapped using the input from the TPS + Ducati pickup. Considerable time has been spent building timing map using hacked Hyperstrada specs. This system can be programed via. USB cable to laptop for any different settings including – timing graphs, kill times, quick-shifter and much more. All instructions, build sheets, parts lists and invoices included with extensive notebook.”
