Loosely based on the R1200S, the HP2 Sport was the third member of BMW’s HP2 (High Performance 2-cylinder) lineup along with the Megamoto and the Enduro. VisorDown said it was “BMW showing what they could do with the Boxer engine if given free rein and they gave their technical boffins in the R&D department carte blanche and an open cheque book“, adding that “never before has a twin from Germany been so explosive or exciting.”

With 130 hp it was the most powerful production boxer engine when it was released – BMW wouldn’t top that number again until the water-cooled R1250 of 2019!

That output was paired with a fantastic soundtrack, BMW’s venerable Telever front fork, a set of powerful Brembo monobloc brakes, 2D GP dashboard, PVM forged aluminum wheels, Öhlins suspension, full carbon fiber bodywork, and a self-supporting carbon fiber subframe.

As the swansong of the HP2 family, the Sport is, in many ways, the pinnacle of fast R-bikes. From then on, BMW moved forward with its S1000R platform.
