With the original design and style of Harley-Davidson in the rearview mirrors, the American-based brand saw an opportunity to pay homage to their roots with some of their latest offerings back in 2008. Introduced as part of the Softail lineup, the Cross Bones came with a distinctly retro look that combined elements of modern engineering with a nostalgic look.
With an appearance that made one question if this was a modern bike or a post-World War II era motorcycle, the original Cross Bones was anything but. Weighing in at roughly 730 lbs., the cruiser featured a 1,584cc air-cooled V-twin engine that put out 75 bhp and 70 ft-lb of torque – respectable numbers in the cruiser class.
Harley-Davidson aimed to bring their newest line of cruisers up to speed with their current offerings, and as a result the Softail models like the Cross Bones came with features such as Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), maintenance-free (relatively) belt drive, ABS, cruise control, and even a factory security immobilizer. While Harley-Davidson wanted to maintain a retro appearance to the Cross Bones, the ride quality needn’t suffer; Harley-Davidson packed the Cross Bones with a hidden rear suspension system, offering a softer ride while still maintaining the vintage look.
