Moto Guzzi first introduced the Norge in 2006 as a full-faired sport-tourer for riders looking to travel far and at speed. Fitted with a 1200cc V-twin, a set of ABS brakes, a full suite of luggage, an adjustable windscreen, and a CARC final shaft drive, the model had all the trappings of a proper long distance steed. Good thing too, as it was a direct competitor to BMW’s venerable R1200R.
Suffice to say, Moto Guzzi’s objective proved a success, as the Norge showed itself to be immensely popular amongst reviewers. As Rider Magazine said in its 2007 review: “The whole bike is quite an achievement, in fact. For a factory which has been through such extended troubled times, the Norge is a highly effective comeback and might just mark the point at which Guzzi begins to make its way back into the mainstream, where the famous old factory belongs.”
Come 2010, Moto Guzzi introduced an updated model with a restyled fairing, an improved exhaust system, and greater ground clearance. As if that wasn’t enough, the Norge also got treated to a stiffer fork and shock, an electrically-adjustable windshield, some redesigned side bags, and three-way heated grips. By far the biggest change to the bike, though, came in the form of a new engine with upgraded four-valve heads. Power grew to a claimed 102 horses, while torque output also improved to some 83lb-ft.
Cycle World summed it up best in its review: “After many days riding the Norge, what comes through most powerfully is the charming way it goes about its sport-toury business. It is far from being the fastest, best handling or most powerful bike in the class… But it is a solid, personality-rich machine with a lot of utility and style.”
