Benelli was one of the many companies that struggled to survive the onslaught of Japanese competition, starting all the way back in the 60s. Over the years, the company was bought and sold several times until it was finally was absorbed by Moto Guzzi in 1988. After the turn of the century, the Italian marque made a return with its first new model in decades — the Tornado Tre 900 superbike.
Though there were some reliability issues, this bike brought Benelli back to the world (it’s still around, currently owned by a Chinese corporation). One of the more interesting technological features were the two fans located beneath the brake light.
And the fans weren’t just a unique styling touch; they were the result of a deliberate decision to move the radiator under the seat instead of the usual position up front. In doing so, this allowed Benelli to make the front end narrower and make the steering geometry sharper. Another interesting touch was the use of aircraft-spec glue in conjunction with screws to secure the four trellises of the frame together.
The base Tornado Tre was equipped with excellent components such as 50mm Marzocchi USD forks, Extreme Tech monoshock, Brembo brakes, and an Arrow exhaust.
This example is VIN: ZBNTB00003P100577. It came to Iconic as an import; prior history is not known.
The odometer shows 1,052 miles.
