After the legendary 1994 RC45, Honda took a lengthy break from producing a limited-production special for the US market. In fact, it took two decades before Honda would try something similar – the Honda CBR1000RR SP.
Honda built 5,000 units to sell worldwide, only a few hundred of which came to America. For an additional $2,700, riders were rewarded with a tremendous amount of upgrades including 43mm Öhlins NIX30 forks (fully adjustable), Öhlins TTX shock (fully adjustable), and Brembo front brakes with four-piston monobloc calipers.
The 2014 CBR engine was already improved from previous years with a revised cylinder head, but the SP version was blueprinted with “handpicked pistons and connecting rods.” Setting off all of the upgrades was the SP-specific livery in the HRC colors of red, white, and blue. Miguel Duhamel summed up this bike by saying, “It’s not a bike that Honda just stamped SP on and have given a different paint job. There are definitely significant differences between the two. I love that little extra wink and smile that you get with the SP.”
