Click here for an VINData Motorcycle History Report on this 2015 Zero DSPS.
Electric bikes are a contentious topic in the motorcycling world, but Zero is one manufacturer that’s managed to prove the concept. Since its founding in 2006, the California-based brand has released a number of different models — some more successful than others — leading the charge in the effort to convert even the most diehard of petrol heads.
The DS (Dual Sport) model was released in 2010 and shared the same Agni motor as the S model. Initially rated at 50 miles per charge, Zero made continuous updates to the model such as switching to a brushless PMAC motor in 2013, Showa suspension and Bosch ABS brakes in 2015, new IPM motor in 2017, better battery in 2018, and so on. This commitment to the bike has paid off and during the decade plus run of the DS: voltage doubled, battery capacity tripled, motor power increased ten fold, and charging times plummeted.
In 2014, Zero began offering fleet bikes to be used for security details and police forces. The Burbank Police Department in California was the first to adopt them and by 2017 Zero proclaimed over 100 North American law enforcement agencies using the SP, DSP, and FXP models. Promoted with a fuel cost of a penny-per-mile and capable of patrolling “urban centers, city streets, tight quarters, parks, beaches and dirt trails”, the police model offered a bevy of useful upgrades for customization such as hand guards, detachable windscreen, top box, side cases, heated seat, sirens, lights, PA, and more. The whole package had a curb weight of 437 lbs (481 with the Z-Force® Power Tank upgrade), produced 68 ft-lb of torque, had a top speed of 98 m.p.h., and a maximum range of 172 miles on a single charge.
This example is VIN: 538SD7Z22FCB05439. The seller purchased the bike two years ago at a Sacramento Police Department auction and states, “This is a 2015 Zero DS Police/Security, also known as the Zero DSPS. This particular bike was part of the Sacramento Police Department fleet but was stored as a spare motorcycle and very seldom ridden. As such this bike has very few miles, just over 2,000, about 500 of which I have added myself. The battery health and range shows no degradation compared to new. Several features are distinctive of the Zero DSPS including the larger 12.5kWh battery, a larger 12v on-board inverter to drive the auxiliary lights and siren, a switch panel that controls these extra functions, improved brakes, and a large brush guard. There is also a rear Pelican lock box. The Police/Security paniers and lever guards all came factory from Zero for this version. For legality purposes all POLICE stickers and emblems have been removed and the RED and BLUE Police lights have been replaced with WHITE and AMBER caution lights. Please note, it is not legal to use the Siren or PA on public roads. Brand new Pirelli MT 60 tires have just been installed front and rear and registration has just been paid (good through Dec 2025). Overall, this 2015 Zero DSPS is in perfect like-new condition. Two keys are included and has a clean CA title in the seller’s name.”
The odometer shows 2,400 miles.
