KTM introduced the 1290 Super Duke R in 2014 with a simple nickname: “The Beast”. It was an apt description. Powered by a monstrous 1,301cc LC8 V-Twin producing 180 horsepower and 106 lb-ft of torque, the Austrian naked bike delivered superbike rivalling performance in an upright streetfighter package. Despite its fearsome specification, reviewers quickly discovered that the Super Duke’s sophisticated electronics, refined throttle mapping, and premium WP suspension made its immense performance remarkably approachable.
The result was one of the defining hyper nakeds of its era. New Atlas summed it up best: “If you absolutely, positively need to be able to wheelie at any time, this would be the bike for you.”
