With roots in the open road stemming back over two decades ago in 1998, the Harley-Davidson Road Glide had long ago become synonymous with touring the expansive country-side it’s country of origin had to offer. When the Road Glide first came to market, it was a huge step forward in innovation for the Bar and Shield, offering a plush and comfortable touring package that came with frame-mounted fairings that improved aero, while sporting a distinctive look that would become iconic in the years to come.
By 2017, the Road Glide had seen significant changes, most notably to the heart of the motorcycle. Harley-Davidson had heard the outpouring of requests for a new and improved engine by conducting surveys and interviews across the world, which resulted in the Milwaukee-Eight. The newest engine from the American company differed vastly from it’s predecessors – namely the twin-cam engines – offering riders much needed features such as improved heat dissipation, an uptick in power, and vibration reduction. Harley kept the heat down on the 1,746cc powerplant with the inclusion of oil cooling, significantly reducing the engine heat that previous models were notorious for.
Beyond the new mill, the Road Glide Ultra came with all the amenities Harley-Davidson fans had come to expect – updated infotainment system, speakers throughout, and spacious, color-matched luggage.
The ’17 Road Glide Ultra was Harley’s first jump into the new age of modern touring, and they landed on both feet with the innovations that came with the new generation of the Road Glide.
