Launched in 2015 to replace the 1190 Super Adventure, KTM’s 1290 garnered wide acclaim and was awarded Cycle World’s best adventure bike. It was advertised as a high performance touring machine with buzz words such as “luxury” and “travel” being the focus of attention. To further drive home which market this bike was intended for, the Austrian firm held the press launch in Gran Cania, Spain.
The powerplant was donated by the Super Duke. Its LC8, 75-degree liquid-cooled V-twin was good for 160bhp and 104ft-lb. of peak torque. Major improvements over its predecessor include KTM’s first semi-active suspension system, bigger fuel tank, and cruise control.
2017 saw the release of the 1290 Super Adventure S and 1290 Super Adventure R. Aesthetically, the new headlight was the biggest change. Split down the middle, it housed daytime running LEDs and cornering lights. Technologically, a new 6.5-inch, full-color TFT screen, auto-cancelling turn signals, and remote keyless ignition were added. The ‘R’ was the more off road oriented model while the ‘S’ was more for the street with slightly less ground clearance.
This example is VIN: VBKV79401JM981397. The seller purchased the bike three and a half years ago and states, “I purchased the bike from my neighbor who was buying a new GS. It’s a great bike and we ride as a group of friends but we no longer go on long distance rides due to busy schedules. The bike is in excellent condition, always garaged and on a charger when not being ridden.”
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 1,000 miles. The odometer shows 8,360 miles.
