Back in 2019, Indian shook up its stagnant cruiser lineup with an all-new model dubbed the FTR. As you’d expect from its naming conventions, the bike borrowed much of its design language from flat track racing; beyond the short, upswept tail, it also featured dual mufflers, wide riser bars, and a sporty paint scheme. For all of their aesthetic appeal, though, the 19-inch/18-inch wheel combo and dirt-ready rubber did nothing for the bike’s performance on the road.
Inspired by Indian’s FTR750 flat-track racer, the FTR 1200 brought the brand’s racing heritage to the street in a distinctive naked motorcycle. Its 1,203cc, 60-degree V-twin produces a claimed 120 horsepower and 85 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six speed transmission and an assist and slipper clutch.
The FTR 1200 has a steel tubular frame with Sachs suspension, Brembo brakes, and 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels wearing flat-track-inspired Dunlop tires. Its styling includes a compact LED headlight, an under-seat fuel tank, and an exposed, muscular V-twin, while standard ABS provides braking assistance without the more extensive electronic rider aids found on the FTR 1200 S.
