After two consecutive wins at the World Superbike Championship in 2015 and 2016, Kawasaki decided to celebrate its success in the best way possible: a limited edition homologation model. Dubbed the Ninja ZX-10RR, the bike took the already track-capable ZX-10R and turned its performance up to 11 (all while retaining its street-legal status).
In practice, this meant that Kawasaki gave the engine quite the overhaul, reinforcing the cases, redesigning the cylinder heads, and coating the valve tappets in a special carbon coating for improved efficiency. When combined with an improved Quick Shifter, some seven-spoke forged Marchesini wheels, and a set of sticky Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires, what resulted was a markedly lighter, faster, and better-handling bike.
Clearly, the improvements paid off on the track, as Jonathan Rea won two more titles in 2017 and 2018. Ever in the pursuit of performance, Kawasaki further updated the ZX-10RR for 2019. In addition to some lightweight titanium connecting rods, it also gained a new finger-follower valve actuation and some reworked Showa suspension.
Limited to just 500 units in total and offered in just one color — Lime Green — it proved a rare and unique piece of World Super Bike history. As Visor Down described it, “It’s composed, packed to the brim with electronic aids, properly rapid, and in the real world is usable. The ZX-10RR isn’t the kind of bike you’re afraid to nip through town on, it can do this as refined as it is an animal when you crack the throttle on and unleash what it was born to do.”
