After getting its start in 2010, Utah-based Vanderhall Motorworks brought its first model to market six years later. Dubbed the “Laguna,” it came in three trim levels, each of which boasted the brand’s three-wheeled, two-seater layout.
The following year, Vanderhall added to its lineup with the Venice, a more approachable model clad in a set of ABS bodywork. As with its predecessors, it featured a GM-sourced turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder engine. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the Venice produced a claimed 180hp at the front wheels and could hit 60mph within 4.5 seconds before climbing to a top speed of 140mph. And here’s the thing — even though the whole package tipped the scales at a mere 1,475lbs, it still boasted plenty of modern conveniences and performance features including heated seats, dual-vent heating, Bluetooth, as well as ABS, traction control, and electric power steering.
As MotorTrend found in its review, “I had a lot more fun on city streets and back roads where I could enjoy the point-and-shoot nature of the GM-sourced 1.4-liter turbocharged mill. The engine’s flat torque curve renders the six-speed automatic’s manual-shift function largely superfluous; just boot the throttle and you’re away, and if you keep your foot planted you’ll be rewarded by a nice double-pop from the exhaust as the transmission upshifts. Vanderhall claims a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds, which seems overly optimistic to me, but there’s no question this thing is quick. And loud. And risky. And wonderful.”
